How A Golf Fitness Book Can Transform Your Game

There are so many “so-called” golf fitness books on the market; but when you open them up you see dozens of pictures of golf models sitting on exercise machines in the gym.

Tip: If your shots tend to drift to the right, it is probably because your body is shifting to the left as you swing. During your downswing, you need to focus on having your hands released more quickly to the ball.

This is NOT a golf fitness book, this is a book pertaining to “general” fitness, but with the title revised to catch the golfers eye. In my mind, this is a little deceptive and can frustrate the consumer.

Tip: Always keep good posture. If you’re uncertain about your golf stance, move your toes upwards and downwards while your feet remain motionless.

When I was doing research for my golf fitness book (manual) I was extremely disappointed. Having been a certified fitness professional for over 20 years and specifically working with golfers the last 10 years I was expecting some good body’s of knowledge on the subject.

Tip: Mental preparation is equally important to your physical preparations where golfing is concerned. Block out the stress and issues of your life and concentrate on your game.

I was extremely let down and even felt like I wasted my money getting them. This motivated me to put together my golf fitness book (manual) so that a golfer of any age or fitness level could apply it immediately.

What are the components of a complete golf fitness book?

The golf fitness book should cover strength specific to golf, flexibility, aerobic conditioning (endurance) and nutrition.

These components should be directed at a golfer, not a person looking to build or tone muscles or just improve their physical fitness.

Tip: Don’t get frazzled by trying to position yourself into an unnatural stance. First, try addressing the ball with no club.

It should also discuss starting points for golfers at every age and fitness level. Have a golf fitness evaluation right in the book to determine your ‘current’ fitness level and ultimately your starting point.

That way you are sure what you are doing is the ‘right’ thing that will help your game not hurt it.

I think that’s the biggest concern for any golfer is not knowing where to start and making sure whatever he or she does will be right for them.

Tip: You got yourself into sand trap trouble, but it is still important to think about the person following you. After you hit the ball out of the trap, take a minute to rake the spot where your ball was lodged.

Secondly the golf fitness book should be able to discuss the direct benefits of any exercise to their golf swing. It’s motivating to ready why you would do a certain exercise if you can see how it will benefit your game.

Tip: Always keep your feet positioned in a straight line. This is important if you wish to have a better golf swing.

And lastly, a golf fitness book should have progressive golf fitness exercises and complete programs to take you to the ‘next level’. I’ve seen so many books that have “general” exercises (not golf-specific) that have no sense of format or progression. This would leave your frustrated and not knowing where to start or progress.

Tip: When standing over the ball, make sure you take a nice deep breath. This can help calm you so that you can focus on the ball.

So next time you go to a bookstore or get online and do a search for golf fitness book, make sure to thoroughly review the explanation and chapters to reassure you are doing the right thing.

Obesity Is A Huge Problem

Today, throughout most of the Western world there is a huge problem. No pun intended but the problem has to do with obesity. Obesity in many countries has reached epidemic proportions. The reason is quite simple. Many people today are overweight either because of what they are eating or because they do not have a regular exercise program. One of the main reasons for this is that it is just not easy for many to lose weight because of their busy lifestyle. So what can a person do? What Does Annika Know About Exercise That You Don’t?

Think of your golf game. Visualize connecting with your drive and sinking your putt. Now think of exercise and how it relates to your golf game. Do you do a total body workout several times per week? Do you have a tailored fitness regimen that pays special attention to certain muscle groups? Do you even exercise at all?

Tip: To help improve your driving, try sticking with irons at the driving range. Even a pitching wedge may help you get warmed up.

Discipline: Discipline involves sticking to the exercise plan. Don’t allow excuses to prevail. Once you have a specific golf fitness exercise plan, then follow it as it is laid out. If the plan calls for a specific core muscle exercise then do the core muscle exercise whether you prefer to do it or not. There are times when certain exercises are more preferential and beneficial in your exercise program. There are also specific times when stretching can be helpful to your game. Everyone has days when exercise is not at the top of their list of favorable activities. However, it is your discipline that will produce the consistency you are looking for in your game.

Tip: When you are lodged in the sand trap, be sure to mind your manners. After you get your ball out, take time to smooth out the sand with the rake.

Dedication: Dedication comes into play when the going gets tough. You will no doubt have obstacles along the way such which prevent you from following even the most detailed plans of action. Remember though that the main difference between those who are successful and those who are not usually comes back to a golfer’s dedication with his or her golf exercise program regardless of the interference. Top fitness doesn’t happen over night. It is essential to stick with your fitness program even if the results are slow to surface.

How To Find Time For Fitness When You Are A Mom

There never seems to be enough time in the day when you are a mother. Between household chores and making sure your kids are at band practice on time, when are you supposed to find any time for yourself? You eat lunch on the run, it is rare that you have time to indulge in your own hobbies, and forget about finding time for fitness! The problem with not finding any time for your own fitness needs is that your body will suffer. If you are not running at your best, how do you expect to provide everything your family expects from you? Here are a few helpful ideas on how you can get some exercise time into your day.

While you do need to get your sleep, is getting up an hour earlier every day an option? Whether you join a local gym and slip out of the house every morning before your children are awake, or you hit the roads for a run, getting your fitness in first thing every day could be the answer you are looking for. Once you return from your fitness time, you can get on with your day and know that you have taken time to tend to yourself first.

If this is not an option, is there time during the day you could join a mother’s fitness group? This is a particularly good option for those moms with younger babies who are still in strollers. Several times a week these groups gather at local parks and schools to power walk or run together with their children. It is a wonderful way to have social interaction time and work out those muscles. You can never have too much fresh air, and you can have conversations with those who are facing similar child rearing issues as you.

Tip: Purchase a new workout toy to give yourself some motivation. This can be a new water bottle or a new athletic top.

The next thing you need to do is find ways to incorporate bursts of exercise into your daily routine. As an example, when you visit the grocery store, do not take that park right next to the front door. Park at the back of the parking lot (provided it is safe to do so) and walk a little bit further to do your shopping. Take the stairs instead of the escalator when you take your next trip to the shopping mall. Do some weight lifting using food cans when you are putting your groceries away. Purchase a 10 minute power exercise or yoga DVD and slip it on while your kids are preoccupied with their homework. There are a lot of ways you can increase your fitness intake during the day. They may be short bursts but when added together they sure add up.

As you can see, being a mom is no excuse for not tending to your fitness obligations. Instead you are just putting it off. When you increase your fitness levels, you increase your energy levels. At the end of the day that is going to be the biggest benefit you can gain.

Yoga For Modern City Life: Yoga Helps Ease Modern Stress

For Gail Stuart, who is finishing a beginner’s series, yoga is an antidote to the stress of her job at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she works with psychiatric research. Most commonly, though, it’s a combination of asanas, pranayama (breathing exercises) and some meditation.
Yoga would be an effective and relatively cheap substitute for many anxious and stressed patients, although they would probably also need to be motivated to become physically fit.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is a text that covers many aspects of life, beginning with a code of conduct and ending with the goal of yoga, a vision of one’s true Self. The Pantajali’sYoga Sutras is probably the most authoritative text on yoga. It defines yoga as a focusing of the attention to whatever object is being contemplated to the exclusion of all others. Yoga isn’t only about postures, or meditation, it is a way of life, or religion. In this influencing scripture there are eight steps to awakening or enlightenment through yoga. These eight astanga or limbs of yoga are: yamas, niyamas, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.

The yamas consist of lessons in moral and social conduct in our environment. It teaches us to restrain from lying, stealing, and greed. Non-violence and consideration toward all living things is the key. Communication with sensitivity towards others and moderation in all things we do is revered.

The niyama focuses on attitudes towards ourselves: compromising, cleanliness, serenity, devotion, and asceticism. One should study and reverence to a higher intelligence. There is an acceptance of our limitations in relation to God. It is key to have removed the impurities from the mind and body.

In the asanas, one focuses on posture practice, positioning the body while incorporating the breath to achieve a greater awareness in the mind. One is alert and relaxed without tension, while observing the reactions of the body and breath to various postures. This minimizes the effect of the external influences on the body, such as diet and climate.

Pranayama, or the restraint and control of the breath, helps with concentration, energizing and balancing of the mind and body.

Pratyahara is the relaxation of the senses, where no distractions actually activate the mind.

Dharana, or concentration, is the ability to direct the mind toward a chosen object and focus in on it alone.

Dhyana, or meditation, is the ability to develop focused interactions with what we seek to understand.

Lastly, but most importantly, Samadhi is the ultimate state of Self-realization, or union with the Source.

For Some People, Learning Yoga On CD ROM Is A Stretch

As if to lend weight to my contention that your computer can, in theory, teach you anything, along comes a pair of CD-ROMs called Wellness Yoga and Shiatsu Relaxation.
Lithe young women demonstrate these ancient Eastern techniques while mellow-voiced narrators speak over somnambulant music, the better to relax you and make you all well.
Most of us are familiar at least with the concepts of yoga, its slow stretching exercises and its often almost unattainable physical positions. Wellness Yoga is a nicely designed program that packages 74 asanas, or positions, into several packages such as the Quick and Easy Course, the Beauty Course and the Health Course.
The program consists largely of what it calls procedure screens, in which each position is demonstrated in one window while described textually in another. A narrator reads that same text aloud. In addition to the usual tape-recorder buttons to pause, stop and restart the action, there is a graph that displays the approximate duration of each segment of the routine.
The practical difficulties of using this CD-ROM are fairly obvious. The manual, dragged kicking and screaming into English from its Japanese roots, advises the user to First practice forming the pose while watching the screen and try memorizing the whole procedure.” This, unless you have a 24-inch monitor or keep your monitor on the floor, is likely to be difficult. Clearly the actual learning of the poses could be more readily done with a videotape.
On the other hand, you can hunt around in the CD-ROM, choose from the positions you want to learn, and collect them into personal groups. And maybe you’ve got a really big monitor, and a cordless, long-distance mouse.
This is a nice program, well-made and instructive. My only complaint is that it does not emphasize clearly enough that unless you are as slender as the model executing the poses, you are not going to be able to do many of them — the Crow, the Heron and the Frog, for instance — correctly. On the other hand, we can all do the Corpse.
Shiatsu Relaxation, which teaches a massage technique clearly related to acupuncture, is another kettle of fish.
The theory is that rubbing, kneading or poking specific points on the body, called acupressure points, will make other parts of the body feel better. I am not prepared to argue that premise, but the entire procedure seems shiatsu yourself is not clear, either; the program initially suggests you find some of your own more accessible pressure points, but they are not all available to your own hands and all the demonstrations show one person ministering to another.
